Having a Baby: Women Eat 5 Times a Day During Lactation

Now that your baby is here and you are breastfeeding, your baby will get a better sense of your favorite foods. Usually if you are breastfeeding, you should generate 23-27 ounces of milk a day. To do this, you need to increase your calorie intake by about 500 per day.

You also need to increase the consumption of water, at least 2 1/2 to 3 quarts of water a day. This is because the water you drink is used for milk production. Try not to drink more than 3 liters of water a day. Anything more than 3 liters can reduce the amount of milk you produce.

As stated earlier, you need to increase your calorie intake. Plans to take in about 2500 calories per day or more if you plan to breastfeed for more than three months. A pregnant woman requires 27 to 30 mg of iron per day because iron is used by the body to make hemoglobin, which is what helps red blood cells carry oxygen throughout the body. A lack of iron leads to a dearth of red blood cells, meaning the body’s tissues and organs don’t receive enough oxygen. With a baby on board, women need to pay extra attention to their iron intake.

Iron is found in both plant and animal matter, but the body absorbs it more easily from meat sources. Many women choose to supplement their diet with vitamins in addition to any folic acid intake they receive from food.

It has been found that consuming folic acid 1 month before and during the first 3 months of pregnancy reduces the risk of neural tube defects by 70%, which is why it’s considered so critical. The neural tube is formed during the first 28 days of pregnancy, which is usually before a woman even realizes she’s pregnant, and it eventually develops into the baby’s brain and spinal cord. Lack of sufficient nutrition, particularly a lack of folic acid, may result in a neural tube defect such as spina bifida.

Although most women experience nausea and vomiting until the twelfth week of pregnancy, queasiness can also come and go during the nine month period. In most pregnant women, such feelings of nausea and vomiting affect their health, especially when it comes to eating. It is important not to skip meals even if one feels sick and queasy, so that the right amount of nutrients are given to the unborn child.

In controlling nausea and vomiting, keeping track of the woman's diet is crucial. When waking up, try to eat a few crackers and rest for fifteen minutes before getting out of bed. Eating small meals can help in avoiding an empty stomach, and cold meals are recommended, since food odor can sometimes be annoying for pregnant women. Eating pickles, pretzels, bread, cake, watermelon, nuts, or mushroom soup can help in relieving the feelings of nausea. How to Manage the Risks of Pregnancy

A lot of women are still unaware of the risks they face during pregnancy and the effects of these risks on their babies. This article discusses some of the most common risks that women should try to avoid when pregnant. Also included are options that they can choose to follow to avoid the risks they may encounter during pregnancy.

During my internship I have met and interacted with a lot of special children and their parents. These children, because of their condition, have then become my patients. As part of providing an affective management for them, it is important for me to know the congenital history of their condition. Thus, I am required to ask their parents, usually their moms, regarding the details of their pregnancy. Most of the children's conditions such as autism, cleft of the lip or palate, cerebral palsy, hearing impairment and mental retardation are congenital in origin and thus can be related to the events that had occurred during their conception. A number of previous researches have indicated that most women who get pregnant beyond the age of 35 may have a higher risk of having children who have mental retardation or  have Down's Syndrome. Some studies also show that exposure of pregnant women to teratogens such as rubella virus and radiation, has caused their children to have hearing impairment or cerebral palsy. Unfortunately, most of the mothers I have talked to are not aware of the risks they encounter during pregnancy as well as the various effects of these risks on their babies.

Congenital problems of children may be caused by various factors or the interaction of those factors. Some problems such as mental retardation and congenital malformations may have compounding causes, while some conditions, like autism, may not even have a definite, proven cause. Most parents I have talked to, especially those that have not yet consulted with any doctor, are surprised to learn that their children's conditions are a consequence of something that they had done or had taken (in cases of medication in-take) during their pregnancy. Some of them even mentioned that they had hoped to have known earlier about the risks of being pregnant, back when they can still do something to prevent it from affecting their children. Other, on the other hand, have expressed their fear of having another child with the looming possibility of their next baby having the same condition.

I felt that as part of my profession it is my responsibility to help inform parents, especially mothers or soon to be mothers, about the risks they face during pregnancy and what they can do about it. I have identified three most common risks; namely, stress, in-take of medications, and smoking and alcoholic drink in-take, that may adversely affect the congenital development of infants. I have also included some options that pregnant women can choose to follow to avoid the said risks and their effects.

Stress During Pregnancy

Researchers have been contending about stress among pregnant women and its effects to infants.  A previous research has claimed that stress during pregnancy does not affect the condition of the baby in any way. However, recent studies show that this can actually cause pre-term labor among women and low birth weight of infants. The feeling of being stressed may be due to different reasons. Among pregnant women this may be attributed to hormonal and physical changes they experience as well as changes in their lifestyle.

There are a lot of things that pregnant women can choose to do to avoid feeling stressed. Among these stress management activities is learning to plan their activities and taking note that those are achievable relative to their current situation. Setting activities that cannot be attained may only frustrate them. Also, they need to remain in control of their lives, but be open to some changes as well. Never take for granted communicating with their husbands or families and learning more about pregnancy as a condition. Lastly, they should always take time to relax and reflect.

Taking Medications During Pregnancy

During my encounters with my patients' mothers, they have mentioned that they experienced having urinary tract infection during their pregnancy and their doctors have prescribed some medications for them to take. However, when asked what those medications are, they cannot recall the exact prescriptions anymore. The same story is reported by some moms who had experienced having a fever or flu instead during their pregnancy. Some medications are really dangerous to be taken during pregnancy and doctors will probably not prescribe medicines to pregnant women if those are known to be harmful. Illegal drugs are out of the questions because those are definitely dangerous even to women who are not pregnant.
What women should do during their pregnancy is to consult their doctors regarding any medications that they plan to take for any illness. Avoid taking unprescribed medications, if possible. Also, note down or record every medication that has been taken; the name of the medicine, when it was taken, how long it was taken, for what illness or condition and the name of the physician who prescribed it. Through this, they can have a source for future references. Also, a list of safe medications are indicated in various sites in the internet and they can easily search for it. However, doctors are still the best persons to consult regarding matters of medications.

Smoking and Taking Alcoholic Drinks During Pregnancy
Tobacco and alcoholic drinks are among the most common teratogens that often cause abnormalities in infants. Other famous teratogens include rubella virus, radiation and illegal drugs. Women who have a history of smoking and drinking during their pregnancy are most probably also the mothers of children who have congenital malformations and cognitive problems.  These teratogens can also cause low birth weight or premature deliveries of babies. In some cases, infants even die before they are born because of those substances. Aside from direct smoking, constant or regular exposure to secondhand smoke can also affect pregnancy in the same way as firsthand smoking, thus, should be avoided.

The option to this risk is quiet simple. Avoid such activities that are definitely harmful to pregnancy. There is no other possible, good option. Also, be aware when in doubt of possible pregnancy. Some mothers I have talked to reported that they were not aware of their pregnancy when they were still smoking or drinking. When they finally learned about their condition, it was already too late. Therefore, women should carefully take note if they suspect of their possible pregnancy.

Throughout the nine months of a child's conception, it is therefore necessary to learn much about being pregnant. A lot of people, places and books may be consulted or used as resources or references for this. One common mistake I have noted among all the mothers I have talked to is their lack of knowledge regarding pregnancy. The risks may not so much affect the mother herself but they will definitely have a negative effect on their babies. Rather than provide a solution to the conditions of their children as an outcome of being exposed to various risks, it is much better if they initially avoided letting their children be at risk of having those conditions.

Planning Ahead While Pregnant

Planning ahead when it comes to food could mean the difference between making wise choices and making irrational choices. It helps us learn how to undo our bad habits and being pregnant is a great time to try and change any bad habits you may have. The best way to break bad habits and to form new ones is to constantly plan ahead.  

You want to plan for snack attacks especially if you are not going to be home. You want to make sure you take some healthy food with you, so that you can resist the temptation of going to the vending machine and taking out that candy bar. Throw some nuts into your pocketbook or some cheese sticks in case of any hunger that might hit you through out the day. 

Plan your food shopping list. Some people find that when they go to the supermarket with just a rough idea of what they need they usually wind up forgetting something important or they wind up buying half of the food store. Take a few minutes to plan your meals for the week and buy what you need to go with it. 

Speaking of planning meals, that is a excellent idea. Plan for meals you can realistically prepare.  Do not plan for meals that you do not have the time to prepare. You are only going to stress yourself out.  Look for recipes that are easy and quick to make. Do not try to make something where you can't pronounce half of the ingredients and need to shop at a gourmet cooking store. Chances are you are still working and the last thing you want to do is come home after a long day and then slave over a complicated recipe.

Also, planning your meals out for the week tends to help you be a little more organized for the week.  It is no secret that pregnant women tend to forget things and this is due to their changing hormone level. By taking out the time to sit and plan your meals for the week will help you stay a little organized and save you a lot of time. If you already know what you are making for dinner, you do not have to worry about coming home after a long day and standing in front of the fridge trying to decide what to make.   

You also want to make sure that get yourself in the habit of using vegetables are your main dish.  Instead of doing chicken breast with a side salad, make your salad your main dish and the chicken breast a side one. You also want to buy your vegetables as fresh as possible, even if that means making two trips to the grocery store through out the week. The fresher the vegetable, the better they are for you and your baby. The same holds true for fruit also. Keep plenty of fruit on hand, especially if you tend to crave sweet stuff through out your pregnancy. Instead of reaching for a candy bar, you can reach for a piece of fruit dipped in cool whip

By planning ahead for the week or even month to come will help you stay on track with your eating and decrease the risk of you making the wrong choice if a craving should hit you.

Nutrition and Pregnancy

You are glad to see that your pregnancy test postive. You will be happy and already caressing your stomach with the hope that your child can feel your presence. The next nine months will be an exciting time for you and your baby. You will have a human life growing inside you and feel them moving as they grow larger. Your baby is formed from a single sperm and eggs (ovary), which evolved into a more perfect form. It really is a miracle.

To assist this miracle together, it is important for you to eat as possible. This is important so that you can go through most of your pregnancy. The first three months or the first 12 weeks of pregnancy may be a bit difficult to eat a balanced and usually you will be reluctant to eat and you usually have signs of morning sickness. If you are one of the lucky ones, the fetus in your stomach will not be active during the first trimester or during the 15 weeks of gestational age.

Then you can take full advantage of correct eating healthy and full of nutrients. Make sure you eat a balanced nutritious diet and nutritious. It is a basic need for your baby. A junk food diet will not help you with the baby's bone growth and organ formation. Potato chips will not help brain development. Your baby and your body needs calcium and vitamins to achieve all this. Eating well during pregnancy will help your baby eat well after birth and the solid food. As the pregnancy progresses, some of what you eat will pass through the placenta and amniotic fluid will taste your baby. Baby swallows this fluid and their taste is so developed that even in the womb they were able to taste the flavor.

Doctors believe that infants are exposed to a variety of fruits and vegetables while in the womb less than the chance of being a fussy eater in later life. They believe that this is a baby who will eat fruit and vegetables without installing any fight. One advantage, other benefits of drinking milk during your pregnancy is all the calcium you will give your baby's bones. Many doctors recommend that you drink at least one glass of eight ounces of milk, usually fat-free day. Calcium is a must to have your baby's bones and teeth, although you will not see his teeth for at least several months.

You can enjoy any time, and then, and thanks to your desire to have baby. Complete your meal with Nutrition and multivitamins are indispensable for the growth of the fetus. Being pregnant should not be seen as an excuse to eat whatever you want as long as nine months. You have to keep nutrition and nutrients you eat, because food intake through you will determine your baby perfection.

Prenatal Vitamins and Pregnancy

Prenatal vitamins are one of the most important vitamins that you take through out your pregnancy.  Ideally, you should start taking prenatal vitamins when you are trying to conceive a baby.  By taking prenatal while you are trying to conceive, you are preparing your body for the challenging task that lies ahead.  Some experts believe that taking prenatal before you are pregnant might actually reduce your risk of a miscarriage after you become pregnant.  

Taking prenatal before pregnancy is not always possible for some people, but taking them during pregnancy is essential.  Prenatal vitamins contain one of the most important nutrients that a new mother needs and that are folic acid or folate.  By taking in extra folic acid, you lower your chances of your baby being born with an incomplete spinal column which is known as spina bifida.  In order for your baby to be protected, it is imperative that folic acid is taken in the first four weeks of fetal development.

This can be a problem for women who do not take prenatals before they are pregnant.  Most of the time, most women do not know they are pregnant until after they missed their period which is about two weeks after conception.  This is why if you are of child bearing age, you should make it a habit of taking folic acid even if you are not planning to become pregnant and we all know that not all pregnancies are planned. 

You can still get your folic acid in food.  Folic acid is added to many breads and pastas and is found in dark green and orange fruits as well as vegetables.  Keep in mind though that taking a daily supplement of folic acid offers more protection from spina bifida then eating the same amount of folic acid in food.   

While you are pregnant you should aim to take at least 600mcg of folic acid a day. If you have had a baby with a neural tube defect, you will have to take 4000 mcg or 4 milligrams of folic acid every day, starting at least a month before you get pregnant. 

Some women report that they can not take their prenatals especially in their first trimester.  Women who suffer from morning sickness and food aversions find that they can not eat much food.  Taking a prenatal on an empty stomach can leave you feeling sick and queasy which is why so many women in the first trimester do not take them. Another reason some women report upset stomachs is due to the high iron level that some prenatals have. Not only could this cause an upset stomach, this can also lead to constipation which can already be a problem for some pregnant women.

If you find that you can not take your prenatal, talk to your doctor to see if he can give you a prenatal with less iron or give you a folic acid supplement also. The worst thing you could do is not take anything, especially during those first few weeks. 

Early Pregnancy and Prenatal Vitamins

If you are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant, you probably know that it is important for you to get plenty of folic acid.  Folic acid helps to reduce brain and spinal defects in your baby, especially in early pregnancy.  What you may not know is how important it is to take multivitamins, as well. 

A study, recently published in the medical journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarkers and Prevention, noted the importance of taking multivitamins if trying to conceive or newly pregnant.  Their research concluded that women who take multivitamins in early pregnancy reduced their child’s risk of developing certain brain tumors.

Researchers found that women taking multivitamins close to the time they conceived had babies who were less likely to develop medulloblastoma and primitive neuroectodermal brain tumors.  Brain tumors are fairly rare in children, occurring in 1 in 20,000 kids under the age of six.  Medulloblastoma is the second most common brain tumor in children.

The study at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia compared 315 children with brain tumors to 315 randomly chosen healthy children.  Researchers called each mother and asked if they had been taking multivitamins before or after conception.  The findings were slightly significant , yet they were comparable to a study conducted in 1993 by a different group.

Interestingly, taking a multivitamin during the later stages of pregnancy did not significantly reduce the infant’s risk of developing brain tumors.  This makes it all too clear that if you are trying to get pregnant, you should begin taking your multivitamins right away.  Then continue with the approval of your physician at least through the early stages of your pregnancy.

Women are strongly urged to choose a multivitamin with 400 micrograms of folic acid.  Reproductive women should eat healthy foods with plenty of vitamins and folic acid.

When choosing your vitamin, check its vitamin A content.  Never take more than 770 micrograms of Vitamin A.  Too much can cause birth defects in babies.

You should also look on the label for the letters USP.  This means the vitamin has been evaluated and meets certain criteria by the U.S. Pharmacopeia Organization.  Vitamins with a USP stamp have certain standardized levels of purity, safety, quality and content. 

Your OB/GYN will help you choose a pre-natal vitamin before you even get pregnant.  So good luck if you are trying to conceive, and take that multivitamin for both you and your baby!

Veganism and Pregnancy

Having a baby is a very exciting time in the lives of most people and trying to stay healthy is something that is at the forefront of most people’s minds.  Trying to carry a successful pregnancy while following a vegan lifestyle might seem extremely difficult, but for the average woman who is healthy during pregnancy it is completely possible to do.  However, there are a few considerations that you should take into account in order to obtain the best results possible.

The average woman going through a normal pregnancy has very few complications.  Yet at the same time, this seems eerily like a wonderful dream that may not actually describe your situation.  Most women have at least some mild problems during their pregnancy, which makes it a bit difficult to have the perfect smooth pregnancy that they have dreamed of.  You are certainly not alone if you have experienced some complications, but if you are Vegan, it is very important to ensure that you are giving yourself, as well as your baby the nutrients that are needed.

It is vitally important that you tell your doctor that you are vegan when you first start seeking prenatal care.  This will help your doctor to discuss your specific nutritional needs and also closely monitor you and your baby to be positive that you are getting the results that are needed.  Many women are able to gain the proper amount of weight with no problems, however many others need assistance monitoring their weight to ensure that they gain enough weight while others need help to ensure they do not gain too much.  There are plenty of ways that your doctor can help you, but without knowing your typical eating habits, it is virtually impossible to determine.

Talking the time necessary to write down all of the foods that you consume is extremely helpful as well.  This will allow your doctor to quickly and easily see if there is anything that you should be eating that you are not presently eating.  Additionally, taking a multi-vitamin is very important.  This will help you to ensure that any deficiencies that you might have are actually resolved, rather than just ignored.  Taking steps to ensure you stay in good health is much better than waiting until a problem develops to seek help as well, especially since your goal is ensuring that your baby stays healthy.

Unlike what you might think, it is not impossible to carry a baby to full term while consuming a vegan diet.  You might need to devote a bit of additional effort to planning meals, but every year there are hundreds of successful vegan pregnancies.  You too can join the women who begin and finish their pregnancies as a vegan and you are sure to be proud that you completed it as well.  Trying to raise your baby as a vegan right from pregnancy is a great start for their life and can also provide some great benefits as well.

Taking the time to really discuss your dietary needs with your doctor is vital though to ensure that you remain healthy.  Also, make sure that you are consuming enough calories to cover your needs as well as the needs of your baby.  This will help you to ensure that your baby develops properly and you are not weak or lightheaded at times.  This is not a problem that is exclusive to veganism though, rather it is a complication that can happen to women regardless of typical dietary habits.

Healthy babies are possible regardless of which diet you choose to follow.  Talking to your doctor and ensuring that you are eating properly are all the basic steps that you need to follow which will be extremely effective in helping you achieve your goal of a happy and most importantly healthy baby.  Skimping over vital nutrients is obviously not recommended regardless of which dietary method you are planning to follow and should be avoided at any costs possible.

The Side Effects of Green Tea During Pregnancy

It is very important to monitor the health of pregnant women to ensure the health of the mother and the baby. Some expectant mothers are quite anxious because of the various changes that take place in their body. Doctors often recommmend a diet regimen for pregnant mothers and if you're among those pregnant women out there, you should be extra careful with your food intake to avoid any problems or complications.

According to some studies, drinking too much green tea during pregnancy is not good. Why is that? Well, doctors and researchers were able to prove that green tea contains caffeine. Caffeine intake is discouraged during pregnancy because of certain side effects.

Despite the many health benefits of green tea which includes preventing cancer, improving the heart's health, boosting the immune system, aids digestion, lowers cholesterol, dental health, lowers the level of blood sugar, and many others, it is not advisable to drink green tea when you're pregnant.

Studies have proven that green tea contains EGCG or epigallocatechins which affects the use of folate in the body. Folate is very important during pregnancy because it can help in preventing birth defects in the neural tube. EGCG becomes harmful in pregnancy because it resembles the structure of methotrexate. The latter can get rid of cancer cells by bonding an enzyme called DHFR or dihydrofolate reductase.

The folate pathway contains these enzymes and since the EGCG is similar to methotrexate, it also binds with the enzyme and when this happens, the enzyme is inactivated. Once the enzymes are inactivated, the body can't use folate effectively. There hasn't been any conclusive studies which show how much green tea a pregnant woman should consume or how much folate can be affected.

Some doctors recommend pregnant women to drink moderate amount of tea as well as coffee. If you're still unaware, green tea also contains caffeine and when you're pregnant, it's not good to drink a lot of beverages which contain caffeine. So if you want to be extra sure, don't forget to ask your doctor next time you have an appointment. Always keep in mind that your health and that of your baby is of great importance.

Besides, there are already studies which proves caffeine to cause miscarriage and lower birth weight among babies. Drinking around six cups of coffee per day can definitely affect your baby's weight at birth. If you don't want your baby to suffer, you can have a cup of coffee a day or if you want, you can just stop drinking coffee. The caffeine content in green tea is lower than that of coffee and so you can drink more than one cup; but as said earlier, ask your doctor about it first.

Pregnancy will only take nine months and so you need to enjoy it. Even if you experience a lot of body changes, just think that you will rejoice the day your precious baby comes. If you can avoid drinking caffeined drinks, then try to stay away from them.

Although the health benefits of green tea are remarkable, it does contain caffeine and no study has yet established the right amount of green tea intake especially among pregnant women. If you're not pregnant and you don't have any problems related to caffeine intake, then you can drink as many tea as you like. Right now, be careful in drinking green tea; perhaps you can settle for a small cup every other day just to satisfy your thirst for it.
When you feel anything abnormal, seek the help of your doctor at once. Besides, its just going to be for nine months and after that, you can resume in drinking tea again. Aside from not taking caffeinated drinks, you're also not allowed to take just any kind of medicine because it can be harmful to your baby.

It goes without saying always think of your baby's safety before you do anything.

Pregnancy and yeast infection

Almost all women at some point of their lives will experience some problems with their bodies, specifically in their private areas. Vaginal infection is a pretty common occurrence among women most especially yeast infection. Furthermore pregnancy and yeast infection seems to be always in tandem. More pregnant women get infected by yeast due to several reasons, some of which may be too hard for you to control.

Yeast infection is also referred to as monilial vaginitis or vaginal candidiasis. The fungi Candida seems to be the main culprit in spreading out the disease. More specifically, the fungus Candida albicans causes for most part the infection in women’s vagina area. However, do be aware that Candida is already present in a woman’s body. The fungus occurs naturally and should not be a cause for alarm.

The food you eat, your personal hygiene and the even the lifestyle you live all can affect the growth of the fungus in  your vagina area. If you eat too much sugar and carbohydrates, the fungus has a lot better chance of surviving and growing eventually causing the full development of  the yeast infection. High sugar levels in the blood and body feeds the Candida fungus more.

For pregnant women, the usual cause of infection would be the changing estrogen levels during pregnancy. As the estrogen level goes high during the months of being pregnant, the body also produces high levels of glycogen. Now glycogen will make the area more susceptible to yeast growth. This according to some experts an a few studies. According to them, glycogen might cause the yeast t grow faster and even allow the fungus to stick on the walls of the vagina.

Taking antibiotics will also help the growth of the fungus. If you have been taking antibiotic pills for a long time, the harmful bacteria will be killed but it may also affect the beneficial bacteria that grows in the vagina area causing the fungus to overpower the helpful microorganisms. Once the fungus has taken over the area, the body will tend to react too it resulting to an infection.

Among the signs that you should look out for includes itchiness, irritation, burning sensation, soreness and redness of the vagina and surrounding area. These at least are the early symptoms of the infection. Once it progresses, you might observe the discharge of an odorless, white, creamy chess-like liquid. Also, I do not know how often you do it especially now that you’re pregnant, but be wary with the sex. The infection might cause some pain during secual intercourse so it would be better to put things off for a while.

The good thing, and I know you mothers are already itching to know, yeast infection does not have any negative effects on the baby inside the womb. The infection will not affect the development of the baby as well.

Another good thing is that treating yeast infection cases in pregnant women is the same with the treatments available to normal cases. However, it would be better to consult your doctor since you don’t know what possible effects yeast infection medicine does to you. There are also over the counter antifungal creams that could be prescribed to you by your doctor. There might be specific product that are intended for yeast infections in pregnant women.

It is said that fifteen percent of all pregnant women will experience yeast infection during their pregnancy. But do not be alarm, that’s bad for the baby so don’t. Pregnancy and yeast infection might be hard to separate. But the thing is yeast infection can be treated.

The Future Of Olive Garden: A Takeout Container Full Of Bread Sticks

Darden Restaurants had its first earnings call since its board was completely replaced two months ago, on which it heavily emphasized to-go ordering at its largest chain. “Olive Garden has great food that travels very, very well.”

With activist hedge fund Starboard Value's complete takeover of Olive Garden parent Darden Restaurants' board in October, everyone knew change was in the air for the fast casual Italian chain.

On Darden's second quarter earnings call Tuesday evening, the company announced that it is indeed the dawn of a new era for Olive Garden, were sales grew by 0.5% in the last three months, compared to a decline of 1.3% in the previous quarter. But the most significant change in the brand's strategy announced on the call isn't that the chain will start salting its pasta water. Instead, the future success of Olive Garden, according to management, will rely heavily on its takeout business.

"[One piece] that I believe is really important in the Olive Garden momentum is to-go." Darden's interim CEO Eugene Lee said on the call. "We're seeing that business grow at 15%. Consumers want convenience."

As evidence for the success of Olive Garden's nascent takeout push—online ordering became available in July, and mobile capabilities only on November 3—Lee announced the brand now receives more than 30,000 online orders each week, and that Olive Garden's takeout business accounts for 8.6% of its total sales. Lee sees that number climbing to as high as 12% in the near future.

Moreover, the average check for Olive Garden to-go orders is 30% higher than that of in-store diners, many of whom are foregoing bottomless breadstick baskets in the restaurant, preferring to slip into a carbohydrate-induced stupor in the comfort of their own living rooms.

"So we have some people that we're trading out of the in-restaurant experience to the to-go experience. [But] it's not like this is totally a negative trade for us," Lee said. "And it's big part of our strategy, as we've identified convenience as a need that we can meet for the consumer because of the type of food that we serve."

Lee added that Olive Garden's menu is well-suited for takeout, emphasizing his faith in the pasta-to-go concept.

"Olive Garden has great food," he said. "That travels very, very well."
